Mrs. Plaisance’s Kindergarten
Parent Handbook 2018-2019
WELCOME! I am very excited about the upcoming school year. By working together, we can make this a great year for your child. I look forward to working with your family as a team to make your Kindergarten experience very beneficial. Kindergarten is a very special time for your child and for you as well. The following paragraphs will explain some important information about our daily routines. Please feel free to ask any questions. You may contact me at school during my planning time or after 2:30p.m. As soon as I have a planning period in place, I will let you know. You may leave me a voicemail by calling the school at (615)904-3795 ext. 28737. I may also be reached by email at [email protected]. Please know that from 7:20 am until the bell rings is not a good time to talk with me. That is a special time for me to welcome the children each day. My attention will be focused on them. However, I will be happy to talk with you during my planning time or after school.
Arrival: School begins promptly at 7:35 a.m. The first bell will ring at 7:20 a.m. children arriving before 7:20 a.m. will sit quietly outside the classroom.
DISMISSAL: Kindergarten car riders will be dismissed at 2:10p.m. The front parking lot will be used for pick-up. Please pull up and wait in your car until school personnel brings your child to the car. I have provided a car tag with your child’s name on it to ensure a quick dismissal time. Please place it in the dash window so that it will be visible. If you do not have your car tag, then you will have to show your ID in the front office to pick up. Please review the pick-up guidelines in your Student Handbook.
*****If there is a change in your child’s dismissal*****
PLEASE write out a note and place it in the blue folder. If I do not see the note he/she will have to be dismissed like he/she normally is. If it is a sudden change during the day, you MUST contact the office and they will notify me. (Please do not leave me a voice mail, please contact the office directly.) The office phone number is 615-904-3796.
*****Again this is for the safety of your child. *****
Children who are late car riders or bus riders will remain with K teachers until the 2:30p.m dismissal time. The children will be escorted to the appropriate location for dismissal.
ATTENDANCE: Blackman Elementary encourages good attendance to promote a high standard of achievement. Please maintain a positive attitude at home regarding school attendance. However, if your child is sick, or has a temperature, please keep them at home so other children will not be affected. Please review all of the attendance guidelines set forth in the Student Handbook of the Agenda. Please remember to send in the Blackman Elementary Absentee Notice when your child has been absent. We are no longer allowed to accept notes in the agenda for absences. Attendance notes should be sent to school in the blue folder. School doors open daily at 6:45 a.m.
Classroom Rules:
Discipline Codes/Behavior: We use these school wide discipline codes, if your child breaks a rule you may see one of these codes in his/her agenda.

T= talking at inappropriate times
DC= dress code correction
CP= care of property: one’s own property, classroom and school property
DP= disrespect to another person including classmates and staff

Name: John Doe
Class: Mrs. Plaisance – Kindergarten
Amount: $2.75

Lunch Reminders:
The school menu is on the web.

o The alternative meal this year a cheese sandwich only. To avoid the embarrassment the child may feel, please make sure that they have lunch money in their accounts.
o Don’t forget that commercial food is not permitted in the cafeteria.
SNACK: We will have snack every day. We are working with the nurse to teach the children health eating habits. Please encourage your child to bring a healthy snack. You may also send a bottled water if you wish. Thanks for your cooperation!
Birthdays: For the safety and health of our students, birthdays will NOT be celebrated with food at school this year. When your child has a birthday, his/her name will be announced during the morning announcements and I will send them to the office for a birthday pencil from the administration. We will also recognize your child’s birthday in the classroom.
Medicine: Parents are responsible for providing all medications, including over the counter medicines. All medicines must be turned into the school nurse who is located in the office. A parent must bring the medicine to school to be signed in.
VISITORS: Any time you come to school and visit your child you MUST show identification and sign in at the office to receive a visitor’s pass. ALL VISITORS HAVE TO DO THIS, NO EXCEPTIONS!!! This is to maintain a safe environment at Blackman Elementary.
Agendas/Backpacks: A backpack is a must for your child to bring to school EVERY DAY. Important papers will be sent home in your child’s blue folder. Without a backpack, it is extremely difficult for your child to make it home with papers and notes. It is also crucial that you check your child’s folder every night to see what he/she has done at school. All written communication from me will be recorded in your child’s agenda.
*Don’t forget to initial your child’s agenda each night.*
Please place any money in an envelope labeled with your child’s name and class name on it. Please label what the money is for. There will be several times that I will need to collect money this year for fieldtrips etc. Any money, notes, correspondence etc. should be placed in the blue folder.
Rest Mats: We will have a 30-minute rest period in Kindergarten until Christmas. Your child will need a thin rest mat or a beach towel.
VOLUNTEERS/HELP: I welcome all parent involvement with open arms into the classroom. Please fill out the volunteer portion on the student information card if you are interested. Parents who wish to volunteer will have to attend the mandatory training by Mrs. Ford. I will communicate the date and time for the training when that information is released. The school does prefer that all volunteers do not bring small children when assisting in the classroom.
REPORT SYSTEM: Report cards will be sent home once every nine weeks. Progress reports will be sent home in between report cards. Skills and units of study will be posted on the weekly/monthly newsletter. Please review any papers that your child brings home. It will help keep you up to date of what is going on in the classroom and keep you informed of any changes in your child’s progress.
Field Trips: We will take at minimum of 2 field trips as a group this year. All information regarding the field trips will be sent home in advance.
Newsletters: In an effort to save time and money, I will upload all newsletters onto my class webpage. I strongly encourage you to read and refer to our newsletter to stay informed in the events happening here at school and in our classroom.
OUTDOOR RECESS: The children will be going out for recess everyday unless it is raining or extremely cold. Please keep this in mind when helping your child to select clothes for the day. Also, we are fortunate to have a variety of playground equipment, including several pieces for climbing. Be sure to keep this in mind when selecting shoes. Flip flops, Crocs, and dress shoes are less than ideal if your child chooses to play on this equipment. If your child must wear these types of shoes, please send a pair of tennis shoes to change into before going outside.
STUDENT HANDBOOK: Please read and familiarize yourself with the Blackman Elementary Student Handbook. You will find this in your child’s agenda. In the handbook you will find important things to know such as the attendance policy, the tardy policy, dress code, cafeteria rules/regulations, and much more.
Wee Deliver: We have a school mailing system where your child can receive a letter from their parents or other students. If you would like to mail a letter to your child our mailing address is:
